Marine life / Beaches / Flora and Fauna / Turtles
The smallest island, but far from being the least interesting! Covered with immense forests, it is also the most pristine one. And its waters are among the richest in terms of fishes and marine life. The Moheli marine park is listed as one of UNESCO’s cultural heritage!
Main towns:
- Fomboni: you’ll find there, the ruins of Sultana Djoumbé Fatima (A woman Sultan! matriarchal society remember!). Many archaeological excavations have revealed the presence of Muslim populations on the island in the IX-X centuries with the discovery of pottery identified as imported ceramics from Iran and Iraq.
- Nioumachoua: Nioumachoua islands lie off the coast and occupy a maritime perimeter of 15 km 5 km. These eight islands dotting the sea are one of the last nesting sites of large sea turtles, and have become a marine reserve. The surrounding seabed is the ideal spot to indulge in scuba diving.
Must see:
Nioumachoua beach
Nioumachoua islets
Crops of ylang-ylang, vanilla and cloves
Migratory whales (during season)
Sea turtles night egg-laying (a must!) …
