The nickname of “Islands of perfumes” given to the archipelago makes most sense here in Ndzouani ( Anjouan), first essential oils producer of the archipelago. Vanilla, cloves, jasmine, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, and more intensively cultivated here.
In terms of scenery there are white sand beaches, tan or black sand ones, but also rivers and waterfalls. The vegetation is extremely lush.

Main towns:
- Mutsamudu: known for its citadel and charming small shopping streets. You could for example visit there a parade ground that still has old cannons pointing toward the sea.

- Bambao: where the Palace of the Sultan Abdallah III is located.
